Executive orders, 1896-1899.

These records document Governor William O. Bradley's power and priviledge to issue commands and instructions. Included are orders authorizing the release of $2000 to the state Board of Health to fight yellow fever in September 1897; directing the formation of a committee to collect funds, clothing and food for "starving and destitute Cubans" in January 1898; and instructing troops to assemble in Covington and Newport to restore the public peace in November 1899. Also included are orders commuting death sentences; authorizing troops to travel through the state; and authorizing the instruction of State Guard.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
